Tert-Butyl Hydroperoxide
Industrial Application
Tert-Butyl Hydroperoxide (TBHP) is an organic peroxide widely used as an oxidizing agent and polymerization initiator in industrial applications. It is commonly employed in the production of polyesters, acrylics, and other vinyl-based polymers, where its controlled radical generation supports uniform polymer chain growth and consistent molecular weight. Tert-Butyl Hydroperoxide is also used as an oxidant in chemical synthesis, including epoxidation, hydroxylation, and other selective oxidation reactions. Additionally, it finds applications in polymer-based coatings and adhesives, where precise radical initiation contributes to uniform film formation, improved adhesion, and enhanced performance of finished materials.
Physical Properties
Tert-Butyl Hydroperoxide is a colorless to slightly yellow liquid with a sharp, pungent odor. It is a strong oxidizer, thermally unstable, and decomposes exothermically, releasing free radicals. It is soluble in many organic solvents but has limited solubility in water. Due to its reactivity, it must be handled and stored with care under controlled conditions to ensure safety and stability.
