Sodium Caprate
Industrial Applications
Sodium Caprate is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry as an absorption enhancer, improving the bioavailability of drugs that are poorly absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract. It functions by transiently modulating tight junctions in epithelial tissues, enabling increased permeation of active pharmaceutical ingredients. In addition to oral dosage forms, Sodium Caprate is incorporated into topical formulations where it acts as an emulsifier, solubilizer, and formulation stabilizer.
Physical Properties
Sodium Caprate is the sodium salt of capric acid, a naturally occurring medium-chain (C10) fatty acid. It typically appears as a white to off-white powder or granular solid with a mild fatty odor. The compound is moderately soluble in water and highly soluble in oils and organic solvents. As a fatty acid salt, it exhibits surfactant-like behavior, enabling emulsification and enhanced permeability effects in pharmaceutical formulations.
