Silver(I) Chloride
Industrial Applications
Silver(I) Chloride is an inorganic compound widely used in photographic, electrochemical, and analytical applications. It is a key component in traditional photographic films and papers due to its light sensitivity, where it undergoes photochemical reactions to form metallic silver. In electrochemistry, Silver(I) Chloride is commonly used in silver–silver chloride reference electrodes because of its stable and well-defined electrochemical potential. Additionally, it is used in laboratory settings as a reagent for chloride ion analysis and precipitation reactions. Silver(I) Chloride also serves as an intermediate in the production of other silver compounds and has limited applications in antimicrobial coatings and specialty optical materials.
Physical Properties
Silver(I) Chloride is a white, crystalline solid that darkens upon exposure to light due to photoreduction to metallic silver. It is odorless, non-volatile, and insoluble in water, though it dissolves in aqueous ammonia and certain complexing agents due to the formation of silver–amine complexes. Silver(I) Chloride has a high melting point and exhibits good thermal stability under normal conditions. Its low solubility and photosensitivity are defining physical characteristics that underpin its use in photographic and electrochemical applications.
