Industrial Application
Potassium Monopersulfate (KMPS, often supplied as the triple salt Oxone) is a powerful inorganic oxidizing agent widely used in industrial, environmental, and chemical applications. It functions as a bleaching agent in hair lighteners, cosmetic formulations, and textile processing due to its strong oxidative properties. Potassium Monopersulfate is also employed as a disinfectant and sanitizer, particularly in water treatment, swimming pools, and food processing. In organic synthesis, it serves as a mild and selective oxidant for epoxidation, hydroxylation, and other oxidation reactions. It is a powerful inorganic oxidizer primarily used in the coal industry to chemically pretreat fine coal before the flotation process. Additionally, Potassium Monopersulfate finds use in surface treatment applications, such as cleaning and activating metals or carbon-based materials, and in environmental treatments including soil and water remediation.
Physical Properties
Potassium Monopersulfate is a white, crystalline solid that is highly soluble in water but insoluble in most organic solvents. It is a strong oxidizer and should be handled with care, as it can support combustion of combustible materials. The compound is stable under dry conditions but may decompose exothermically if exposed to heat, moisture, or contamination. KMPS should be stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area, away from reducing agents and organic matter, and is typically handled in stabilized formulations to ensure safety and chemical stability.
