Potassium Bromide
Industrial Applications
Potassium Bromide (KBr) is widely used in chemical, pharmaceutical, and laboratory applications. It serves as a source of bromide ions in organic synthesis, photography, and as a component in veterinary medicine. In laboratories, Potassium Bromide is used in infrared spectroscopy as a transparent medium for preparing solid samples. It also finds use in pharmaceuticals, particularly as a sedative and anticonvulsant in veterinary applications.
Physical Properties
Potassium Bromide is a white, odorless crystalline powder. It is freely soluble in water, forming colorless solutions, but insoluble in acetonitrile. In aqueous solutions, it exhibits a variable taste: sweet at low concentrations, bitter at moderate concentrations, and salty at higher concentrations. Potassium Bromide is thermally stable under standard conditions and chemically inert in dry form.
