Polysorbate
Industrial Applications
Polysorbates are widely used as nonionic surfactants and emulsifiers in industrial, household, and institutional (HI&I) cleaning products. They stabilize oil-in-water formulations, improve wetting, solubilize oils, and act as dispersing agents. They are commonly found in surface cleaners, degreasers, fabric softeners, air care products, and other formulations where emulsification and ingredient compatibility are critical. Their mild nature makes them suitable for use in less aggressive cleaning products as well.
Physical Properties
Polysorbates are viscous, oily liquids that range from yellow to amber in color. They are soluble in water and many polar organic solvents. Their amphiphilic molecular structure, consisting of polyoxyethylene chains and fatty acid esters of sorbitan, allows them to act as effective emulsifiers, solubilizers, and surfactants. They have low volatility and good thermal stability under typical formulation conditions.
