Methylethyl Ketone Peroxide
Industrial Application
Methylethyl Ketone Peroxide (MEKP) is primarily used as a free-radical initiator and curing agent for unsaturated polyester resins, fiberglass-reinforced plastics, and gel coats, particularly in marine, automotive, and construction applications. It also serves in polymerization and cross-linking processes.
Physical Properties
Methylethyl Ketone Peroxide is an organic peroxide usually supplied as a solution in phlegmatizers (such as dimethyl phthalate) to reduce its high instability and shock sensitivity. It is a colorless to slightly yellow liquid with a pungent, sharp odor and is only moderately soluble in water but readily soluble in many organic solvents. MEKP is highly reactive and decomposes exothermically, releasing oxygen, making it both a strong oxidizer and a hazardous material requiring careful handling.
