Hydrazine Hydrate
Industrial Applications
Hydrazine Hydrate is widely used across numerous industrial sectors due to its potent reducing capabilities and chemical versatility. Its largest application is as a precursor to polymer blowing agents, such as azodicarbonamide, which are used to create foam structures in plastics and rubber. In power generation, it serves as an oxygen scavenger in both nuclear and conventional steam cycles, removing dissolved oxygen to prevent corrosion in boilers, pipelines, and heat exchangers. It also functions as a key chemical intermediate in the pharmaceutical industry for synthesizing active ingredients including certain antibiotics and anti-tuberculosis drugs, and in agriculture for producing herbicides, pesticides, and plant growth regulators. Additionally, Hydrazine Hydrate is used as a long-term storable spacecraft propellant, as a gas-generating precursor for automotive airbags via sodium azide production, and in metal refining to reduce metal salts and remove oxygen impurities in electronic-grade and rare metal processing.
Physical Properties
Hydrazine Hydrate is a colorless, transparent, fuming liquid with a faint ammonia-like odor and weak to moderate alkalinity. It is fully miscible with water and ethanol but insoluble in chloroform and ether. It exhibits strong hygroscopicity, readily absorbing moisture and carbon dioxide from the air, the latter producing a characteristic white smoke. At elevated temperatures it decomposes into nitrogen, ammonia, and hydrogen, and it reacts vigorously with strong oxidizers such as nitric acid and potassium permanganate. Its strong reducing power, alkaline nature, and broad solubility profile make it a highly reactive and industrially valuable compound, though it requires careful handling due to its toxicity and corrosive effects on materials such as rubber, glass, and leather.
