Epoxidized Soybean Oil (ESBO) functions as a secondary plasticizer and stabilizer in PVC and other polymer systems, improving flexibility, UV resistance, and heat stability while also acting as a cost-effective, bio-based alternative to phthalates. It is widely used in the manufacture of flooring, wall coverings, sealants, adhesives, inks, and food contact materials due to its low toxicity and compliance with certain food safety regulations.
Physical Properties
Epoxidized Soybean Oil (ESBO) is a pale yellow to light amber, viscous liquid derived from the epoxidation of soybean oil’s unsaturated fatty acids, giving it a high oxirane oxygen content. It is insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents and has good thermal stability, low volatility, and a mild odor.
