Dibromomethane
Industrial Applications
Dibromomethane is widely used as a solvent, reagent, and intermediate in chemical synthesis. It serves in the production of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, dyes, and flame retardants. It is also used in laboratory-scale organic reactions, including halogenation and methylation processes. In industry, Dibromomethane can act as a specialty solvent for fats, oils, and waxes due to its ability to dissolve hydrophobic substances.
Physical Properties
Dibromomethane is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a mild, ether-like odor. It is slightly soluble in water but readily soluble in most organic solvents, such as alcohols, ethers, and hydrocarbons. Dibromomethane has a moderate boiling point, moderate vapor pressure, and is dense relative to water. It is chemically reactive, particularly under strong heating or in the presence of light, and should be handled with care due to its toxicity.
