Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate
Industrial Applications
Copper(II) Sulfate Pentahydrate is widely used across several industries. In agriculture, it serves as a fungicide and herbicide, helping to control bacterial and fungal diseases in crops. It is also used as a micronutrient supplement in fertilizers to provide essential copper for plant growth. In the chemical industry, it is a key reagent in the production of other copper compounds, including pigments, dyes, and electroplating solutions. Additionally, Copper(II) Sulfate Pentahydrate is used in laboratory settings for qualitative and quantitative chemical analysis and in the preparation of copper-based catalysts.
Physical Properties
Copper(II) Sulfate Pentahydrate appears as bright blue, crystalline solid with a characteristic metallic and slightly bitter taste. It is highly soluble in water, forming blue solutions, and practically insoluble in alcohol. It has a triclinic crystal structure and is hygroscopic, meaning it can absorb moisture from the air. The compound is stable under normal conditions but loses water of crystallization upon heating, converting to anhydrous copper sulfate.
