Cetearyl Alcohol
Industrial Applications
Cetearyl Alcohol is widely used in industrial and commercial applications due to its mixture of cetyl (C16) and stearyl (C18) fatty alcohols. It functions as an emollient, emulsifier, thickening agent, and stabilizer in formulations across personal care and cosmetics, including moisturizers, hair conditioners, shampoos, lotions, creams, and medicinal skin products. Cetearyl Alcohol is also utilized in HI&I cleaning and textile industries where its surfactant and emulsion-stabilizing properties improve formulation performance and product texture.
Physical Properties
Cetearyl Alcohol appears as a white or off-white solid or waxy flakes at room temperature and can sometimes be in semi-solid or liquid form depending on composition. It is insoluble in water but soluble in many organic solvents. Chemically, it is a mixture of C16 and C18 fatty alcohols, chemically stable under normal conditions, with low volatility and low toxicity. Its emulsifying, thickening, and emollient properties make it suitable for a wide range of personal care and industrial formulations.
