Industrial Applications
Bromoform is primarily used as a laboratory reagent in organic synthesis and chemical research. It serves as a brominating agent, a solvent for halogenation reactions, and in some cases, as an intermediate for producing other brominated organic compounds. Its high density and bromine content make it useful in specialized analytical and preparative procedures.
Physical Properties
Bromoform is a colorless to slightly yellow liquid with a high density and characteristic sweet odor. It is poorly soluble in water but miscible with many organic solvents. Bromoform is chemically stable under normal conditions but is sensitive to strong bases and reducing agents. It has a relatively high boiling point among haloforms and is volatile, making it suitable for use as a dense, heavy liquid in laboratory applications.
