2,2-Di(tert-butylperoxy)butane
2,2-Di(tert-butylperoxy)butane is a dialkyl peroxide compound commonly used as a radical initiator in industrial polymerization and cross-linking processes. It appears as a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a faint characteristic odor. It is insoluble in water but soluble in most organic solvents. Due to its high-energy peroxide bonds, it is thermally unstable and decomposes upon heating to release free radicals, which makes it highly effective in initiating polymerization of ethylene, styrene, and other monomers, as well as in cross-linking polyethylene and elastomers. In addition, it is used in the production of foamed plastics and as a vulcanizing agent in the rubber industry.
