Tetrabutyl Urea (TBU)
Water Treatment
Tetrabutyl Urea (TBU) is an organic compound featuring a urea core substituted with four butyl groups, typically appearing as a clear to pale yellow viscous liquid. It has moderate solubility in organic solvents and limited solubility in water. In water treatment, TBU is used primarily as a solvent and intermediate in the synthesis of specialty chemicals and as an additive to enhance the performance of scale inhibitors and corrosion inhibitors. Its unique structure imparts strong hydrogen bonding capabilities, which can improve the efficacy and stability of water treatment formulations.
