Sodium Hydroxide
Industrial Applications
Sodium Hydroxide is widely used as a strong base in industrial processes, including water and wastewater treatment, where it serves to raise pH and neutralize acidic streams. It is also applied in combination with metal salts to precipitate heavy metals and phosphates, and is used in the manufacture of chemicals, soaps, detergents, and pulp and paper.
Physical Properties
Sodium Hydroxide is a white, highly hygroscopic solid that is highly soluble in water, producing a strongly alkaline solution. It is corrosive, absorbs moisture from the air, and must be handled with appropriate safety precautions.
