Industrial Applications
Sodium Hydroxide is widely used as a strong base in industrial processes, including water and wastewater treatment, where it serves to raise pH and neutralize acidic streams. It is also applied in combination with metal salts to precipitate heavy metals and phosphates, and is used in the manufacture of chemicals, soaps, detergents, and pulp and paper. Sodium Hydroxide is also extensively used in nuclear and fossil power plants for regenerating anion exchange resins in demineralizer systems and pH adjustment in cooling water, and is used in alkaline water electrolysis and electrocleaning. In the coal industry, Sodium Hydroxide serves as a crucial chemical agent for environmental remediation, mineral extraction, and coal upgrading. It is widely used for glass cleaning and surface preparation in glass manufacturing, and is a standard component of mirror manufacturing chemistry.
Physical Properties
Sodium Hydroxide is a white, highly hygroscopic solid that is highly soluble in water, producing a strongly alkaline solution. It is corrosive, absorbs moisture from the air, and must be handled with appropriate safety precautions.
