Isobutanol
Industrial Applications
Isobutanol (i-BuOH) is widely used as a solvent and chemical intermediate in industrial and commercial applications. It serves as a raw material for the production of coating resins, isobutyl acrylate, isobutyl acetate, and isobutyl methacrylate. Isobutanol is also used in paint thinners, inks, adhesives, and other specialty chemical formulations where a medium-polarity solvent is required. Its branched structure provides improved solubility and lower volatility compared to straight-chain alcohols.
Physical Properties
Isobutanol is a colorless, flammable liquid with a characteristic hydrocarbon-like odor. It has a low to moderate solubility in water and is fully miscible with many organic solvents. The compound has a moderate boiling point and exhibits low vapor pressure relative to lower molecular weight alcohols. Chemically, it is stable under normal conditions but is flammable and should be handled with appropriate safety precautions.
