Methyl Alcohol

Industrial Applications

Methyl Alcohol (Methanol) is a versatile, colorless liquid widely used in industrial, laboratory, and chemical manufacturing settings. It serves as a solvent for coatings, adhesives, resins, and laboratory reagents, and is a key feedstock in chemical synthesis, including the production of formaldehyde, acetic acid, plastics, polyesters, and other specialty chemicals. Methanol is also employed as a fuel and fuel additive, in antifreeze and de-icing formulations, and as a denaturant for ethanol in industrial processes. Additionally, it is used in pharmaceutical manufacturing, biodiesel production, and as a reagent in various organic reactions, reflecting its broad utility across multiple industries.

Physical Properties

Methyl Alcohol is a colorless, volatile liquid with a characteristic alcoholic odor. It is highly flammable, completely miscible with water and most organic solvents, and has a low viscosity and good chemical stability under normal storage conditions. Methanol has a boiling point of approximately 64.7 °C and should be handled with care, using appropriate fire prevention, ventilation, and personal protective equipment. Storage in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from heat, sparks, and incompatible materials, is recommended to maintain safety and product integrity.
