Ethylene Dibromide
Industrial Applications
Ethylene Dibromide (EDB) is primarily used as a chemical intermediate in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and other organic compounds. It has historically been used as a fumigant and pesticide for soil treatment and in grain storage, though such uses have declined due to toxicity concerns. In industry, Ethylene Dibromide is employed in the production of leaded gasoline additives, as a solvent for resins, and as a brominating agent in chemical manufacturing.
Physical Properties
Ethylene Dibromide is a colorless to slightly yellow liquid with a sweet, chloroform-like odor. It is moderately soluble in water but highly soluble in most organic solvents, including alcohols, ethers, and hydrocarbons. It has a relatively high boiling point and density compared to other small organic liquids. Ethylene Dibromide is chemically stable under normal conditions but is toxic, flammable, and should be handled with proper ventilation and protective equipment.
