Copper Sulfate
Industrial Applications
Copper(II) Sulfate is widely used in agriculture, chemical, and industrial processes. In agriculture, it is applied as a fungicide, algaecide, and micronutrient supplement to provide essential copper for plant growth. In the chemical industry, it serves as a reagent for synthesizing other copper compounds, pigments, and dyes. Copper(II) Sulfate is also used in electroplating, metal surface treatment, and in laboratories for analytical chemistry, including Fehling’s and Benedict’s tests. Additionally, it is employed in water treatment to control algae growth in reservoirs and ponds.
Physical Properties
Copper(II) Sulfate appears as a pale blue or white crystalline powder, depending on hydration. It is odorless and has a slightly metallic taste. The compound is highly soluble in water, forming blue solutions, and insoluble in alcohol. It has a triclinic crystal structure, is hygroscopic, and decomposes when heated, producing copper(II) oxide and sulfur oxides. Copper(II) Sulfate is stable under normal storage conditions but should be kept dry to prevent hydration or clumping.
