Industrial Applications
Cobalt Sulfate Heptahydrate is widely used in the production of pigments, particularly cobalt blue, for ceramics, glass, and paints. It serves as a precursor for manufacturing cobalt salts and cobalt-based catalysts used in chemical processing. In electroplating, cobalt sulfate provides a source of cobalt ions to produce durable, corrosion-resistant metal coatings. It is also used in battery manufacturing as a precursor in cathode material production. Additional applications include use as a trace element additive in animal feed (in tightly controlled amounts) and as a reagent in laboratory chemical synthesis.
Physical Properties
Cobalt Sulfate Heptahydrate appears as pink to red monoclinic prismatic crystals or a red granular solid. It is odorless and highly soluble in water. The compound begins losing water of hydration upon heating and becomes anhydrous at approximately 788°F (420°C). It has a melting point near 96°C (with decomposition of hydrates) and is stable under normal conditions, though it can oxidize when heated strongly. The compound is known to exhibit carcinogenic and genotoxic properties, requiring careful handling and storage.
