Industrial Applications
Sodium Bisulfite is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry as an antioxidant and preservative, protecting oxygen-sensitive drugs from degradation. It is commonly incorporated into injectable formulations, vitamin solutions, and enzyme-based products to maintain stability and extend shelf life. In chemical manufacturing, Sodium Bisulfite also functions as a reducing agent in the synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients and other sensitive intermediates.
Physical Properties
Sodium Bisulfite is a white, crystalline inorganic salt with a faint sulfurous odor and high solubility in water. It acts as a reducing agent, readily reacting with dissolved oxygen and oxidizing species. The compound is stable under normal storage conditions but can decompose when exposed to heat or strong acids, releasing sulfur dioxide gas.
