Sodium Benzoate
Industrial Applications
Sodium Benzoate is widely used as a preservative across multiple industries due to its antimicrobial properties. In food and beverage manufacturing, it inhibits the growth of bacteria, yeast, and fungi in acidic products such as soft drinks, fruit juices, pickles, and salad dressings. In personal care and cosmetic production, it preserves shampoos, conditioners, facial cleansers, moisturizers, and body lotions. In pharmaceuticals, it is used in eye drops, ointments, and other formulations to maintain sterility and prevent microbial contamination. Additionally, it functions as a stabilizer, buffering agent, and chelating agent in various industrial processes.
Physical Properties
Sodium Benzoate is a white, crystalline powder or granule that is odorless and tasteless at low concentrations. It is highly soluble in water and slightly soluble in alcohol. Chemically, it is the sodium salt of benzoic acid, stable under normal storage conditions, and functions effectively as a preservative in acidic environments. Its solubility and stability make it easy to incorporate into liquid and solid formulations across food, personal care, and pharmaceutical products.
