n-Heptane
Industrial Applications
n-Heptane is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry as a nonpolar solvent for extraction, purification, and crystallization processes. Its ability to selectively dissolve nonpolar substances makes it valuable for isolating and refining active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). n-Heptane is commonly used in recrystallization steps to achieve high-purity drug compounds and in solvent extraction to separate hydrocarbon-based impurities from crude reaction mixtures.
Physical Properties
n-Heptane is a clear, colorless, highly volatile liquid composed of a straight-chain seven-carbon hydrocarbon. It has a low density, low viscosity, and a characteristic gasoline-like odor. As a nonpolar solvent, n-Heptane is insoluble in water but readily dissolves hydrophobic organic compounds. It has a low boiling point and evaporates quickly, making it useful in processes requiring rapid solvent removal.
