Toluene
Industrial Applications
Toluene is a methyl-substituted aromatic hydrocarbon widely used as a solvent in paints, varnishes, adhesives, coatings, and chemical manufacturing. It is also used as an intermediate in the production of benzene derivatives, explosives (such as TNT), and other organic compounds. In laboratories, it serves as a medium for chemical reactions requiring non-polar solvents.
Physical Properties
Toluene is a colorless, volatile liquid with a sweet, aromatic odor. It is moderately soluble in water but miscible with most organic solvents. It has a boiling point of 110.6°C, a density of approximately 0.867 g/cm³, and low viscosity. Toluene is chemically stable under standard conditions but highly flammable.
