Iso-octane
Industrial Applications
Iso-octane is widely used in the petroleum and fuel industry as a key reference standard for determining the octane rating of gasoline. It is blended into fuels to improve engine performance and reduce knocking. In industrial and laboratory settings, Iso-octane also functions as an effective non-polar solvent for oils, hydrocarbons, and other hydrophobic compounds. It is used in analytical chemistry, fuel formulation research, and as a carrier solvent in various chemical processes.
Physical Properties
Iso-octane is a clear, colorless, highly volatile liquid with a mild gasoline-like odor. It is a branched hydrocarbon and an isomer of octane (2,2,4-trimethylpentane). Iso-octane is insoluble in water but miscible with many organic solvents. It has a low density, a boiling point of approximately 99°C, and a high vapor pressure, contributing to its quick evaporation. As a non-polar compound, it effectively dissolves other non-polar substances and exhibits excellent chemical stability under normal storage and handling conditions.
