Caffeine
Industrial Applications
Caffeine is widely used as a functional ingredient in beverages such as coffee, tea, energy drinks, and soft drinks for its stimulating effects. It is also incorporated into foods as a flavor enhancer and plays a significant role in personal care products due to its bioactive and antioxidant properties. In cosmetics, caffeine is valued for its ability to constrict blood vessels, reduce inflammation, protect the skin from oxidative damage, and potentially stimulate hair follicles in shampoos.
Physical Properties
Caffeine is a naturally occurring alkaloid that appears as a white, crystalline powder with a bitter taste. It is moderately soluble in water and highly soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and chloroform. Caffeine is thermally stable under typical processing conditions and has a melting point of around 235–238°C, making it suitable for use in both food and cosmetic formulations.
