Industrial Applications
Tetrabromoethane is widely used as a dense liquid for industrial and laboratory applications. It serves as a gauge fluid in microscopy and as a solvent for fats, oils, and waxes. Additionally, it is employed as a flame retardant in plastics and for separating materials based on density due to its high specific gravity.
Physical Properties
Tetrabromoethane is a heavy, colorless to slightly yellow liquid. It is insoluble in water but readily dissolves many organic compounds, particularly nonpolar substances such as fats and oils. It has a high density, a relatively high boiling point, and is chemically stable under normal laboratory conditions. Its heavy liquid properties make it useful for density-based separation processes.
