2-Bromoethanol is a versatile industrial chemical used primarily as a reagent in organic synthesis. It is employed in the preparation of 2-bromoethyl glycosides from acetylated sugars and in the synthesis of 2-bromoethyl methoxymethyl ether. Additionally, it can act as a reducing agent for nitroarenes. Beyond its use in chemical synthesis, 2-Bromoethanol also functions as a solvent and as a raw material for producing various intermediates.
Physical Properties
2-Bromoethanol is a colorless to dark brown liquid. It is water soluble and also compatible with many organic solvents. The compound is reactive due to the presence of both a bromine atom and a hydroxyl group, and it should be handled with care as it may decompose under inappropriate storage conditions.
