N-Bromosuccinimide
Industrial Applications
N-Bromosuccinimide (NBS) is widely used in organic synthesis as a selective brominating agent. It is employed in radical bromination of alkanes, allylic and benzylic positions, and in electrophilic substitution reactions of aromatic compounds.
Physical Properties
N-Bromosuccinimide is a white to off-white crystalline solid. It is moderately soluble in water and highly soluble in polar organic solvents such as acetonitrile, DMF, and acetone. It is stable under dry, dark conditions but decomposes when exposed to moisture, heat, or light, releasing bromine. N-Bromosuccinimide is a mild oxidizing agent and must be handled with care.
