Lanolin
Industrial Applications
Lanolin, also known as wool wax, is a natural, waxy substance secreted by the sebaceous glands of sheep. It is widely used in personal care and cosmetic products for its exceptional emollient and moisture-retaining properties. Lanolin is found in moisturizers, lotions, lip balms, hair conditioners, and cosmetics, where it forms a protective barrier that helps prevent water loss from the skin. Industrially, lanolin is also utilized in leather treatments, metal lubrication, and pharmaceutical ointments due to its lubricating and conditioning abilities.
Physical Properties
Lanolin appears as a yellowish, semi-solid wax with a characteristic odor. It is insoluble in water but miscible with oils and many organic solvents. Its ability to absorb up to twice its weight in water makes it ideal for emulsifying and hydrating applications in both industrial and cosmetic formulations.
