Ethyl Bromoacetate is widely used in organic synthesis as an alkylating agent. It is a lachrymator and in the past, has been used as a tear gas agent in chemical warfare. Ethyl Bromoacetate has uses as a riot control agent.
Physical Properties
Ethyl Bromoacetate is a clear, colorless liquid that is insoluble in water but soluble in alcohol, benzene, and ether. It is a lachrymator and must be handled with care. Being an organobromide compound, it is moderately volatile and has a distinct pungent odor. It is chemically reactive, especially with nucleophiles, due to the presence of the bromoacetyl group.
