Industrial Applications
Iodine is a halogen element widely used in industrial, chemical, and laboratory applications. It serves as a precursor in the production of iodides, pharmaceuticals, disinfectants, and antiseptics. Iodine is also employed in the manufacture of dyes, catalysts, photographic chemicals, and as a reagent in organic synthesis. In the nutrition and food industry, it is used for iodine fortification in salt and animal feed.
Physical Properties
Iodine is a dark gray to purple-black solid with a metallic luster at room temperature. It has a characteristic sharp, pungent odor and sublimates easily to form a violet vapor. Iodine is sparingly soluble in water but highly soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and carbon disulfide. It is moderately toxic and corrosive.
