Bromine
Industrial Applications
Bromine is a halogen element widely used in industrial and chemical applications. It is primarily employed in the manufacture of flame retardants, drilling fluids, water treatment chemicals, and organobromine compounds. Bromine is also used in the production of pharmaceuticals, dyes, pesticides, and photographic chemicals. In laboratories, it serves as a reagent for halogenation reactions and as a precursor to bromide salts.
Physical Properties
Bromine is a reddish-brown, volatile liquid at room temperature with a strong, irritating odor. It is slightly soluble in water but highly soluble in organic solvents such as carbon disulfide. Bromine is corrosive and toxic with a high vapor pressure. It reacts readily with metals and organic compounds and must be stored in tightly sealed containers to prevent evaporation and degradation.
